Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch. Released on 18 November 2022, these games mark the first instalments in the ninth generation of the Pokémon video game series. Unlike their predecessors, these games take place in an open world set in the Paldea region, which is based on the Iberian Peninsula.
Players have the option to follow one of three distinct storylines and encounter 110 new Pokémon, including two new regional forms. Furthermore, the games introduce Paradox Pokémon, time-displaced creatures, and the Terastal phenomenon, which allows a Pokémon to transform into its exclusive "Tera Type". The games retain popular features from previous modern Pokémon games, such as large open areas and Pokémon appearing in the overworld.
The Paldea region of the Pokémon universe is characterized by diverse landscapes, including lakes, wastelands, and mountain ranges. The Great Crater of Paldea lies in the centre of the region and is an area where the Terastalization phenomenon was first discovered. The region is divided into 20 different areas, with each area having its unique Pokémon ecosystem and scenery.
Players can obtain creatures known as Pokémon primarily through catching and trading to explore the world and battle other Pokémon trainers, as is typical of previous games in the series. A new feature allows players to choose to battle trainers on paths. Scarlet and Violet have open worlds that include both urban areas and open wilderness, without borders between the two. Progression through the games is non-linear, and players have three routes available to choose from, with objectives within routes that can be completed in any order.
The games introduce three new starter Pokémon, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, and two new legendary Pokémon, Koraidon and Miraidon. Koraidon or Miraidon can be used to traverse the environment, and a mechanic called "Let's Go" allows players to send out a Pokémon to roam the overworld and automatically battle wild Pokémon. The games also feature co-op play with up to three other players.
