There's been a bit of controversy regarding Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on the Nintendo Switch recently regarding the omission of Retro Studios from the credits. This got me thinking, I have a copy of the original game on the Wii, I can just play that! But then I got thinking about something totally ridiculous that I had to do, and that was to hook my original Wii up to the RetroTink 4K upscaler and play it in 4K!

So what is the RetroTink 4K? It is a 4K video upscaler, designed to improve the look of component, composite, s-video, VGA, RGB SCART, and HDMI inputs to see if it is the ultimate retro gaming upgrade. I've been a huge fan of the RetroTink line since the original RetroTink 2X, and continue to love every release they come out with.

To connect my Wii to the RetroTink 4K I used my trusty HD Retrovision Component Video Cables. The Wii can output 480P without modification, which is perfect for going into the RetroTink 4K. I used my Kuhami 4K capture card to record the footage, but when I was setting things up I ran into one slight issue. I wanted to show DKC Returns in HDR, but my capture card did not support that. Dang it! Oh well.

Upon firing up the game and starting to play I was brought back to how wonderful this title is and how much I loved it. My oldest daughter and I would regularly play couch co-op with this, and we just had a blast. Even in standard 480P this game still looks really good, but in 4K? Heck yeah, this looks great! Now I don't doubt that the Switch version will look a little cleaner, and for sure it's a lot less expensive than going the route that I did, but if you already have the hardware like I do, this is a great way to play!

My youngest daughter has been asking about this game, and I think it's going to be something she and I play just like I did with her sister on the Wii. What do you think about the overall result of this test? Do you think it looks decent? Share your thoughts in the comments!
