Revisiting our Biggest Kickstarter Disappointment | It Works Now?!
Back in 2021, I backed the Genki Shadowcast on Kickstarter. See, I am always looking to improve the quality of my captured gameplay footage. Over the years, I've gone from shooting my TV with a Phone, then I upgraded to an EZ Cap 284 to capture footage, followed up by an Elgato HD, and some awesome AVerMedia Capture devices most recently. When Genki launched their Kickstarter for the ShadowCast, and when I saw the $40 price tag I knew I needed to try it out.

When we reviewed the Genki Shadowcast in early 2021, I was highly critical of the device and described it as one of, if nor our biggest Kickstarter Disappointment. I did not feel that it delivered on its promise of being able to play HDMI feeds through your laptop as a monitor. At least on a Windows machine, there was a ton of lag, to the point where it was really unplayable. While many suggested using an HDMI splitter to capture on my computer and play on a TV, the whole premise behind this device was to do everything through the computer. It only seemed that this issue affected Windows users, as Genki admitted to me that their development was primarily on Apple devices.
In late 2024 I had to buy an iPad for work, so I bought an iPad 10. I recently got to wondering if Genki's claims that the Shadowcast should work better on Apple products, so I dusted off the Shadowcast and connected it to my Switch OLED and my iPad 10. Then, something interesting happened.
IT WORKED!
I was able to play games through the ShadowCast via the Genki Studio App and it worked wonderfully! I pressed a button and a button responded, exactly as I wanted it to! This was what was advertised and, while it has taken almost 5 years, its working as it should!
Genki has recently started to ship the ShadowCast 2, a device I passed on based on my poor experiences with the original. But truth be told if you're a Mac user this works as advertised! Now I haven't tested out my Windows 11 laptop recently, but I may do so in a future video. But I am glad it works now.
