Over the years, Nintendo has continued to push the envelope when it comes to design aesthetics and game controllers. In an era of joystick controllers, they came out with the NES game pad. When 3D games became a genre Nintendo came out with the N64 controller with the analog stick. With all of this design history, how is it that 30 years later Nintendo has never addressed this specific controller flaw? And it pains me most because this flaw exists on 2 of my favorite systems of all time, the Super NES and the Super Famicom.

I get it, a lot of people are going to say the Super NES and the Super Famicom controllers are basically the same controller, what could I be talking about? While they are basically the same controller, there's a major difference between both of these. The weird thing is one solves the other one's issue and the same is true of the other controller.

First and foremost I love the Super Famicom controller. I love the button colors and everything, but the problem is that the X and Y and the A and B buttons share the same shape. Now taking a look on the Super NES controller, the X and Y and A and B buttons are either concave or convex, so you can tell the difference via feel. The problem is that the purple colors are just not as good as the color combo on the Super Famicom.

Why did Nintendo never make this button color combination with this button shape I will never understand. Truth be told I do love both of these controllers, I just wish that we would have gotten a controller with the Super Famicom Button Colors with the Concave and Convex button shapes on the SNES. I also think it's bizarre that the SNES button shape disappeared, and all controllers today have the same button shape. That to me is a huge step backward!

Have you ever wondered why Nintendo did this? Do you prefer the SNES or the Super Famicom Button Layout? And do you know why Nintendo has never addressed this? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
