Shortly after the release of the Nintendo Switch, third party manufacturer started to make power supplies and docks for the system. Shortly thereafter, troubles crop up with reports of systems becoming bricked and damaged. The reason behind that is that, early on, manufacturers did not understand how the Switch handled power hand off when it was docked. Manufacturers have since gone to work to develop compatible devices to charge your Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED without causing issues.
AVerMedia has been stepping up their game with their new Go series of video gaming and content creator accessories. The Elite Go and Core Go power supplies offer safe, fast charging for multiple devices while providing an HDMI output to connect to a TV, and at least on the Elite, a way to capture your footage.
Heart of why this works in others cause damage is due to a power standard called PD 3.0. PD 3.0 is the USB Power Delivery 3.0 standard. It's a powerful charging technology that allows for faster and more efficient charging of laptops and other devices through a single USB-C port. PD 3.0 can deliver a wide range of power levels (up to 100W), making it suitable for charging a variety of devices, including laptops, tablets, and smartphones. It operates at higher voltages and currents, resulting in faster charging times compared to older USB standards. By supporting both data transfer and high-power charging through a single USB-C cable, PD 3.0 simplifies connectivity and reduces cable clutter. If your laptop supports PD 3.0, you can use a compatible charger to power it through a USB-C port, eliminating the need for bulky proprietary power adapters. This can be particularly convenient for travelers who want to minimize the number of chargers they need to carry.
Since the Elite Go has all of the features of the Core and then some, that is what I focused my testing on especially since I wanted to test out the capture capabilities. When I hooked my Nintendo Switch up and the Elite Go to my computer, I was concerned initially because my laptop was connected to a PD 3.0 dock, and I was concerned if the double voltage input would cause issues. Well, it did. To be able to capture properly I had to bypass the dock and go straight into my laptop. Bummer because I lost peripheral access. This isn't anything wrong with the Elite Go, simply the way that it works since it provides current along with data.
I did have one other issue that I explained in the video where I was getting screen flickering On the recording through OBS. I did some research and if you go into your preferences and in OBS, go to "Settings - Advanced" and set "YUV Color Range" back to "Limited" that should take care of it if you run into similar issues.
From a gameplay standpoint I couldn't tell that I wasn't connected to a traditional Nintendo Switch dock. It just worked which is what you want. colors were vibrant, audio was spot on, and I did not feel any added latency, lag, or delay.
For further testing I connected my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra which was down to about 80% charge. I didn't time it but it seemed like within 20 minutes it was at 100% charge, underscoring that it can definitely handle PD 3.0 fast charging standards.
Why They RoX:
Compact charger and power supply for multiple devices
PD 3.0 power standard
Provides HDMI output to connect to external display
Integrated capture card in the Elite
Compatible with Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, Steamdeck, and SHOULD work with Switch 2
What could be improved:
Only one USB and no HDMI cables included
Flickering in OBS with default values
Cannot be combined with PD 3.0 laptop docks
Should you buy one?
I have been using a smaller 65 W PD 3.0 adapter for about a year and a half now and have absolutely love it. I can charge my phone, it powers my laptop, it is so convenient. The AVerMedia Elite Go and Core Go provide higher power outputs, HDMI port, and I can capture with the Elite to my computer. There are some technical limitations if I'm using it at home at my desk, in the end I practically would not be using a portable power supply at a stationary position. Once I got the YUV setting correct on my OBS, which took me about half an hour to research and figure out, video quality was terrific out of the elite.
If you need to replace your laptop power supply anyway, these offer fantastic features at around the same price. There may be more here than what the average consumer might need, but if you are a gamer on the go this is definitely something you will want to take a look at.
