I will readily admit I love me some Nintendo. They are my favorite software developers and made my favorite consoles of all time, too. As such, I generally give them a break when things might get a little controversial. But one thing for me is to not be disrespectful. Unfortunately, that is precisely what Nintendo has now done for the second time, and they have done it to the same developer. Let's discuss how Nintendo apparently Erased the Original Developer From Donkey Kong Country Returns HD credits!

A little background here. The original Donkey Kong Country Returns was released on the Original Nintendo Wii and the 3DS. Since Microsoft had acquired Rare, who developed the first three DKC games, for DKC Returns Nintendo handed duties off to Retro Studios. They are an American video game developer based in Austin, Texas, but more importantly, they are actually a subsidiary of Nintendo. In addition to Donkey Kong Country Returns, they are best known for developing the critically acclaimed Metroid Prime series of first-person adventure games. Retro Studios is a key player in the Nintendo ecosystem, known for delivering high-quality and innovative games.

When the HD remake was announced for the Nintendo Switch of DKC, many thought that Retro Studios would be handling the port. Well, that's not the case as the port was handled by Forever Entertainment who also worked on remakes of Panzer Dragoon, The House of the Dead, and Front Mission. They know their stuff, for sure. But with DKC Returns HD's embargo being lifted it has been reported that all reference to Retro Studios is gone. There was a passing reference to this port being based on the works of the original developers, but Retro was not named.

To me, this is terribly disrespectful. I know there have been frustrations over the delays for Metroid Prime 4, which Retro was supposed to handle, but this is ridiculous. To treat one of their own internal teams like this is nothing short of a slap in the face as far as I am concerned.

Did you plan on buying Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for the Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED later this week? What do you think of this move by Nintendo? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
