762This is the Boomerang SuperJump.
Link and Young Link are unique in Melee in that their grab - hookshot - is a grapple. This can be used on the ground to pull in opponents from far away, in the air to rack up some disappointing damage, or from offstage to help you recover.
If you’re airborne and grapple to a wall, you’ll drop down and hang for a few seconds. While in this state, you can either press A to reel yourself in, or hold on until you let go.
But something weird happens if you catch your boomerang while in the hanging state.
The game initiates a burst of upwards momentum, as if Link were reeling himself in, but cancels the animation before he has a chance to slow down, launching the Hero of Time into the stratosphere.
Sadly, this glitch was only present in NTSC version 1.00 of Melee, and was quickly patched out in later releases. Still, seeing guys like Axe pull off combos like this remains one of the coolest things in Melee
