TMNT Arcade 1989
UHHH, man this game feels gross.
So thinking of the next game I plan on playing, the time traveling one, I was expecting some cheesiness, poke things to death, kinda meh. I was missing one achievement which was don't get turned into a turtle by the beam from Shredder, did it and then I remembered why I didn't like this game despite other issues. It doesn't work.
For gameplay aspects, the game has such things as combos in it, but despite putting that in, decides that the enemies need immunity frames, so the safest approach is poking them to death. This can lead into some cheap shots when you're fighting any enemy pretty much and is all around awful design. Neglects other functions in the game and leads to cheap hits. This is the port though, so you can pretty much die forever it seems and not really be at a loss.
Hit detection is pretty bunk and I'm hoping it's specific to this port of the arcade only. You can be aiming in the same location over and over then suddenly, it doesn't hit, despite the animation going in the same location, then, to top it off, you get hit in return, because despite no one moving, you're in hitting range. Bebop is a pretty fair boss fight, Rocksteady can be ok, but his hitbox is very shifty in comparison. I honestly don't know why he uses a gun when his kick is so absurd. Most bosses come with a attack that lands first, animations later, so it's very easy to get plastered on the wall from just a damage block of nothing.
The achievements that WORK and do as they are stated are a neat little challenge for continual play, though most of the time they're pretty easy to honestly achieve. Like not getting set on fire, you can just get plowed instead of torched, so not a big deal. Ice is annoying, but the top only has two and you can hit them before they hit you if ya really care. Even if bosses are being cheap, you can get in more hits to beat out the damage cap to get those achievements. I think I remember something about that achievement only working online in specific circumstances not stated, but it doesn't say that, so just another fault.
Something for nostalgia when it was released for like 5 dollars, better to just go for one of the more higher quality games that have been released in general.
