0The Division 2 is yet another major 2019 release for which I have zero actual enthusiasm (previous examples include Anthem and, more controversially, Resident Evil 2). After the frame rate-killing Metro Exodus, it's sure nice to see a new shooter running at a mostly smooth 4K 60 FPS on my expensive new gaming rig, but beyond the pleasures of traversing a meticulously rendered urban wasteland there's really not much for me to be positive about. The cover-based shooting feels completely unbalanced for solo play, and despite an admirable tactical dimension (positioning and flanking really means something in this game), there's just not enough variety to the core gameplay to make it worth slogging through the lengthy campaign and many side missions. Despite having relocated from New York City to Washington DC, TD2 is so structurally similar to the first game that it's easy to forget that you're even playing a new installment in the series at all.
