This is part 2 of 2 of "My Top 10 Best of PS2 Graphics" videos. It’s only my second YouTube video edited with a commentary track. All of the PlayStation 2 games shown here were run in 5x native PS-2 resolution with full texture filtering and proper widescreen patches on PCSX-2, the Sony PlayStation 2 emulator, on my PC. This video is not a game-play skill demo; it's more of a technical video showing what I view to be the 10 PS-2 games which look the best when played in Full HD. This is not my top 10 PS2 games list; it's purely visual, though I truly love every one of the games on the list.

The original resolution of the PS2 varied greatly from 480p to 1080i. Most games were rendered at or below 480p depending on the effects which were used. For example, the amazing looking Ico used so many effects, that when coupled with fluid animations, it ended up running at 512x224 on PS-2. There are only 4 games which ran at 1080i on the PS2; two of them are the Polyphony Digital games Gran Turismo 4 and Tourist Trophy. Both games are not a true 1920x1080 though, but rather 540p scaled using an interlacing field system. Playing visually taxing games on an actual PlayStation 2, in the case of God of War 2 and Zone of The Enders 2, would routinely cause frame-rate drops in dense scenes. Shadow of the Colossus for example, ran natively at 25fps and dropped to 15 at times.

From part 2 of my countdown, here are the best ways to experience the 6 titles listed: Okami: PS3 HD Release: 1080p Widescreen, with low Anti-Aliasing; Via PCSX-2: 5x native resolution= 3,200x2,400 scaled down to 1080p 60fps, played with my original PS-2 DVD. Gran Turismo 4: PS-2: 540p scaled to 1080i with excellent frame-rates; Via PCSX-2: 5x native resolution, using an ISO created from my original PS-2 DVD. Zone of The Enders 2: PS3 HD Collection: According to the EuroGamer Technical breakdown, after the latest patch, it was upgraded from its initial 720p, with low frame-rates, to “Rendered internally at a resolution of 1280x1080 with FXAA.” The frame-rates now vary from 49-60 fps with v-sync; Via PCSX-2: 5x native resolution, played on my original PS-2 DVD at 60fps.

Metal Gear Solid 3: PS3 HD Collection: 720p Native, 60fps; Via PCSX-2: 5x native resolution, using an ISO created from the original PS-2 DVD. Resident Evil 4: PS3 HD Release: 720p Native, 30fps; with low Anti-Aliasing and very blurry textures; Via PCSX-2: 5x native resolution, using an ISO created from the original PS-2 DVD. Honestly, the best way to play it is the recent Steam PC ‘Ultimate’ release, which is 1080p and up, and natively 60fps with new light sourcing, added bump mapping and vastly improved textures. Lastly God of War 2: PS3 HD Release: 720p Native, 60fps, with 2x Anti-Aliasing; Via PCSX2: 5x native resolution scaled down to 1080p at 60fps, looking much sharper and cleaner than the PS3 port, and played on my original PS-2 DVD.

Note: If there is a series, such as God of War or Metal Gear Solid, I picked the version which looked the best to me. All of the games are playable via a PS3, PS-4, X-Box 360 or an X-Box One pad. I legally own all of the games shown and played them on PCSX2 using the original DVDs. DVD-9 games however, or games exceeding 4.5 gigs on PS-2, were played using ISOs I created from my actual game discs. PCSX2 has some issues reading actual DVD-9 disc games. Royalty free YouTube music was used for any games with licensed soundtracks.
