Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting 2 (or MSS 2 as we're gonna refer to it from now on) is another new Touhou Derivative work, this time a sequel to 2019's MSS 1 which you can actually grab for free on Steam. This time there's multiple characters, 7 Stages, and overall it's a huge improvement on the original. Some of the bullet patterns really had me sweating my ass off trying to dodge them, but using Sakuya's time slow ability actually felt super engaging and fun.

MSS 2 is a game that likes to have a little fun with the property, the characters appearances are a little embellished let's say. Some scantily clad outfits are aplenty if that's your bag, but most of the game remains PG for those of us who are just here for the gameplay. The music is a bit of a mixed bag but I was really enjoying the rendition of Heian Alien that plays when you fight Nue, and when she transformed into an actual UFO I thought that was pretty funny and cute.

The gameplay is actually really solid this go-around, with stages having some strange difficulty spikes but overall the way the balancing is for the levels feels admirable. I really particularly enjoy how the perspective shift changes how you strategize and route out your paths through the bullets, with 3 different characters you are gonna have a ton of options. MSS 2 actually impressed the heck out of me in this regard, and I know I'll have a lot of fun messing around with all the different characters and their unique abilities. I definitely think it's worthy of the "touhou" moniker!
