Produzido nos anos 1980, o AE86 era um Toyota Corolla de tração traseira e motor potente que até hoje tem uma legião de fãs fora do Brasil.
As gerações conservadoras dos Toyota Corolla oferecidos nos últimos 30 anos no mercado automotivo brasileiro são responsáveis pela fama do modelo de ter um público mais velho.
Mas embora a esportividade passe longe do carros produzido atualmente em Indaiatuba (SP), mais conhecido pelo baixo consumo das versões Hybrid e pelo rodar confortável dos exemplares com o motor 2.0, a família Corolla já teve um membro que se destacava justamente por ser um carro voltado para um público mais jovem: o AE86, lançado em 1983.
Na verdade, AE86 era o nome dado ao projeto que deu origem a dois carros da Toyota: o Corolla Levin e o Sprinter Trueno. Ambos criados como esportivos potentes e acessíveis.
O Corolla Levin usava faróis convencionais, enquanto o Sprinter Trueno trazia a frente em cunha com faróis escamoteáveis. Mas como ambos usavam a mesma carroceria cupê de duas portas e liftback de três portas, passaram a ser identificados pelo público e pela própria Toyota apenas como AE86.

But although sportiness is far from the cars currently produced in Indaiatuba (SP), better known for the low consumption of the Hybrid versions and the comfortable running of the models with the 2.0 engine, the Corolla family already had a member that stood out precisely because it was a car aimed at a younger audience: the AE86, launched in 1983.
In fact, AE86 was the name given to the project that gave rise to two Toyota cars: the Corolla Levin and the Sprinter Trueno. Both created as powerful and affordable sports cars.
The Corolla Levin used conventional headlights, while the Sprinter Trueno had a wedge front with retractable headlights. But as both used the same two-door coupe and three-door liftback bodywork, they began to be identified by the public and by Toyota itself simply as the AE86.)
