The continuation of my Genoese Gold campaign in the Europa Universalis Four mod Meiou and Taxes. In this campaign I will play semi-tall and only grab provinces that have coded trade modifiers like estuaries and harbors, with the exception of some provinces that are either good cities or needed in order to get to trade provinces. I plan on colonizing North and South America as well as my way around Africa and conquering the trade nodes in Asia to create a global trade empire.

Genoa was a merchant republic that existed from the year 1005 until 1797. Genoa started as a member of the Holy Roman Empire, but the power of the HRE was eventually eroded as consuls of the cities seized more power. Along with Venice, Genoa had one of the largest fleets in the Mediterranean and used it to control trade. When the crusaders established the Kingdom of Jerusalem, Genoa was rewarded for their participation and allowed to set up colonies in the Levant, North Africa and the Aegean sea, which helped them to control the Silk Road trade.
After the fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, Genoa expanded their holdings in the Black Sea and Crimea by setting up additional colonies. In the 1200s the Republic battled with their enemies the Republic of Pisa, another merchant republic in the Mediterranean. Genoa was able to destroy Pisan power during the Battle of Meloria. The Black death entered Europe from the Genoese port of Caffa in the Black Sea and led to both economic and population collapse around Europe.
Genoa battled with the Republic of Venice during the 13th and 14th centuries, fighting five wars over 200 years. This culminated in the War of Chioggia, where Venice was able to soundly defeat Genoa and gain control over the Mediterranean trade, causing Genoa to go into a decline that was exasperated by their losses in the Aegean to the ascending Ottoman Empire.
The 1400s was a century of foreign control for Genoa. In 1396 the Doge of Genoa made Charles the Fourth of France the defender of Genoa, opening the doors for foreign control of Genoa. Between 1400 and 1461, control of Genoa switched between France to Milan and then back to France again. In 1461, the Genoese revolted against the French and restored the republic, but Milan conquered Genoa in 1464 and held it until 1499 when the French took direct occupation of Genoa until 1528. In 1528, Genoa came under the influence of the Spanish and the two increased their ties. Between 1557 and 1627 Genoa experienced a new revival as the premier bankers of Europe after Phillip the Second of Spain went bankrupt and ended the banking dominance of Northern European German banking families like the Fuggers. Genoa lent money to Spain, giving them a stable income and in turn giving Genoa the gold and silver that originated from the Spanish mines in South America and Mexico. Spain declined in the late 17th century, leading to the decline of Genoa as well.

Genoa continued on through the 18th century but was never more than a minor power in the region. It was eventually annexed by Napoleon in 1797 who established the Ligurian Republic that lasted until 1805 when Napoleon directly annexed the territory into France. After the end of the Napoleonic wars, the locals re-established the republic but at the Congress of Vienna the territory was given to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
