159This is a review of TumbleSeed for the Nintendo Switch, by 8-Bit Eric. In TumbleSeed, you move a seed up a procedurally generated mountain, but the mountain is full of holes. You can only move the seed with a green vine that stretches horizontally across the whole screen, using the left and right analogue sticks to tilt each side up and down.
As you move the beam from side to side, the seed rolls back and forth, so learning to control its momentum is key.
TumbleSeed takes inspiration from Taito's 1983 arcade game Ice Cold Beer. The different sections of the mountain are simply themed: green forest floors, brown desert sands, pure white snow.
You start out with three hearts, which can be lost by getting hit by an enemy, falling into holes, damaging yourself with abilities, or via one hit kill spikes.
As you wind your way up the mountain, you will repeatedly come across small plots of soil. These can be used with any of your powers, as long as you can roll over them.
The default seed, Flagseed, will allow you create checkpoints, another one will let you regain health, while Thornseed will give you protective thorns, The in-game currency is crystals, and you'll need to spend one of them every time you use one of these powers.
Crystals can be found scattered throughout levels, but they can also be obtained by destroying enemies or by using the Crystal suit. TumbleSeed is a ridiculously hard game, when you die you completely start over. All progress is not saved.
Since it is all procedurally generated, making each playthrough different, it can be hard to come up with a strategy for this game. There’s also a leaderboard to track distance and time with friends and other players, as well as a daily challenge mode to try and rack up a high score in. It is available on PC/Mac/PS4/Switch
