213This is a review of Thumper for the Nintendo Switch by 8-Bit Eric. Thumper is a rhythm-action game where you take control of a scarab traveling at high speeds along a track, and you have to hit buttons and turn at the correct moments in rhythm
These obstacles include turns, rings, glowing bramble, and squares on the floor. Each of these track hazards requires a special button press (or a combination of buttons) to clear, failing to punch the correct button will strip away the scarab’s armor. Miss two timed button presses in a row and the level resets.
There are 9 increasingly challenging levels. Each of the nine levels is divided into (roughly) fifteen to thirty sections
Each level has a mid-boss and a final boss, which is a wicked looking monster face thing. His name is Crakhed! Play+ unlocks after beating level three and this time you pilot a faster, golden beetle.
The rules for taking damage are the same, but if you die, it’s game over, and you have to retry the entire level. HD Rumble is one of the new features that the Switch brings to the Thumper. Thumper runs at 1080p and 60 frames per second while the console is docked, and at 720p 60 FPS while in handheld mode.
The controls are simple, one button and the thumbstick, and success is dependent on hitting the button in time. It’s satisfying, addictive, and difficult, perfect package for anyone looking for short bits of fun.
The PC and PS4 versions of Thumper came out last fall and now it’s available on Nintendo Switch. There’s no difference between this version and the original, The only real difference is the ability to take Thumper on the go
