Tunic - Enter The Fox
The action adventure game, what really needs to be said about this genre? It has its own worlds and ways to make the game feel alive. This game was on PS Plus for a time as a free game and It stuck with me as another curious release that I warmed up to on post video.
Tunic goes back to 2015, brainstormed by Andrew Shouldice with heavily influence to the Legend of Zelda on NES, was released originally on the PC and Xbox in March 2022, with PS4/PS5 getting a port on September 27th 2022, We are a fox that wakes up in a post apocalyptic world and we're on a quest per what I could piece together of the story to save a fox trapped in a Crystal that we encounter. The Broken language and strange in game manual we piece together doesn't really form the story together which forces the player to decide for themselves what really is happening.
The 3D world itself is gorgeous with a haunting and heart strings pulling soundtrack contributed and composed by Janice Kwan, and Terence Lee which hand Tunic the feeling of us alone in a unfamiliar and dangerous world. Unlike the traditional action adventure, we have to locate a weapon which first is a stick, then we get a sword and later a shield alongside potions/bombs and other items. Combat will take time to understand as we can roll dodge, dash, and attack/block pretty quick though with the default option, a stamina meter limits how much we can do this before needing to recover. Praying at a Fox Shrine heals us fully and act as a checkpoint
A unique thing is Tunic is flush with accessibility options such as Stamina being removed, less camera shake, less screen flash, and so forth making it among the more accessible games I've seen out there, Difficult will throw people and lead you to either feel indifferent or enjoy Tunic with its boss battles requiring a fine balance of health potion usage and dodging without leaving yourself open, and this gets quite tricky at the last boss. There are certainly other games that may seem more impressive, but the whimsical and bright Tunic is among the more impressive adventure games I've glossed over.
