Upon completing playthroughs with the initially-available characters, more are revealed. The third character in particular seems like maybe there could be meaningful additions to the route or plot?

I really wanted to hope this would be the case, with how underwhelming the first two playthroughs were, but that's also reason enough not to expect much. I was hoping for at least an alternate ending.

Unfortunately, the third character doesn't even offer that much. There is one new cutscene at the start which makes absolutely zero sense, then the rest of the game plays as normal - including the existing cutscenes which also make no sense as they feature characters you aren't playing as. Extremely disappointing. The only purpose of the third character is to give you a character that can do everything at once, as opposed to the first two having abilities split between them.

Meanwhile, the fourth character - seemingly added specifically in the Nightdive remaster - gets similar treatment, though I expected as much in this case. Incidentally this character might be the most interesting to play due to its limited weaponry and faster movement which seems to have opportunities to break maps wide open - not to mention it's seemingly the only thing actually capable of dodging attacks in chapter 1.

On the bright side, I did finally figure out where the final PSG part was. Unfortunately even that has a downside, as the PSG has to be the wonkiest "ultimate weapon" I've ever seen.

I've certainly played more than I care to of this game at this point. Hopefully I save someone else some time by doing so.
