UK's Military Kit Exiting Afghanistan 19.06.13
The operation to bring thousands of vehicles and containers of equipment back from Afghanistan is "world-beating", a senior Army logistician has said.
Brigadier Duncan Capps, Commander Joint Force Support, who has recently returned from a six month deployment based at Camp Bastion, said the redeployment of kit from Afghanistan ahead of the drawdown is already well under way.
Speaking at a briefing in central London, Brig Capps said since October 1 2012, when redeployment started, and June 1 this year, 625 vehicles and pieces of major equipment have already been brought back to the UK.
He said the equivalent of 1,815 containers have been redeployed in total - 1,080 returned to the UK, and 735 disposed of in theatre, either sold or disposed of appropriately.
Brig Capps said efforts are under way to reduce equipment in Afghanistan whilst maintaining operational capability, with an "industrial-scale" operation at Camp Bastion to make sure equipment coming back to the UK is ready to be reissued.
