This video comprises a demo of Ultimate Doom's E3M6 'Mount Erebus' in which all monsters, items and secrets are scored from a pistol start with no damage taken, whatsoever --- which I call a No Damage Completion. There is live commentary on the challenge attempts and commentary is included throughout the video.
In a change to my usual format, attempts are included starting from the first one; let me know your reaction to this in the comments.
A great deal changed since I succeeded at this map back in 2019, not least my learning of the 'tic counting technique' for traversing medium or short lengths of damaging floor without being hurt. In particular, I found more efficient uses for the two invulnerabilities, whereas in 2019 I used one powerup to pick up items in the lava and the other just to rocket myself into the secret exit. A key problem on this level is the 'leaky suit' risk, and my 2021 strategy manages to completely avoid this possibility, effectively making the radiation shielding suits completely redundant. I pick one up in the backpack building purely as insurance, in case my tic counting method should go wrong (it didn't!)
There are seven shotgun guys to deal with in the early stages, however most of the difficulty in playing for no damage in this most impressive of Sandy Petersen levels, is in researching the tic counting method for 5 different trips * and finding what I believe is probably the best order for tackling the monster traps. By all means ask me about tic counting in the comments; I'm happy to answer your questions.
*Tic counting is based on the fact that poison can only hurt you when the level time is 1 tic more than a multiple of 32 tics, which is also known as the 'weapon bobbing cycle'.
