This video comprises ten demos, many in clip form, for the challenge of scoring all monsters, items and secrets in Scythe's Map 13 'Subverted Base' from a pistol start, with no damage taken whatsoever, culminating in the new UV Max + Reality + Items World Record demo for this map. The first half of the video is about playing cautiously, with live commentary. Then I speedrun the challenge. There are outtakes included, and commentary throughout.
Scythe is the popular vanilla-compatible megawad for Doom 2 released by Erik Alm and Kim 'Torn' Bach in 2003 and can be downloaded for free from: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/scythe
Speedrunning records are maintained by the Doom Speed Demos Archive (DSDA) at: https://dsdarchive.com/wads/scythe?level=Map 13
Unfortunately I only just noticed after finishing editing the video that Cyberdemon531 had previously achieved a Reality record on this map of 3:18.86, which I beat by 3 tics with my 13th attempt.
What I enjoyed most in speedrunning this challenge was that, unlike in previous speedrunning efforts, I kept consistently questioning my route --- not so much my order of fighting enemies, since this map is highly linear, but more my choice of weapons for ammo management. I'm particularly pleased that in my World Record demo I used up all of my rockets and plasma before the final trap, which supplies Doomguy with another 100 cells and 2 rockets.
Patience is required for this challenge; the shotgun guys near the start can be escaped from easily at first, but they snipe later on, especially when I'm grabbing the rocket launcher to blow them up. It's almost as though they know of my plans! Splash damage is a lot of fun to exploit when you want to kill shotgun guys without them having eyes on you.
Erik Alm has succeeded yet again in making a consise level full of varied threats with rocky walls and buildings coming together beautifully. Let me know in the comments what you think of the map and how I tackled the challenge.
