This video comprises six successful demos and five outtakes, mostly in clip form, for the challenge of scoring all monsters and secrets on Ultimate Doom's E3M6 'Mount Erebus' while taking no damage, as fast as possible from a pistol start, otherwise known as UV Max + Reality Speedrunning.
The demos, culminating in the new UV Max + Reality World Record for Mount Erebus, all have commentary and the outro features a special explanation of my use of straferunning.

Speedrunning records are maintained by the DSDA (Doom Speed Demos Archive) at: https://dsdarchive.com/wads/doom/leaderboard?category=UV Max

A special thanks to everyone in the Doom speedrunning community, who have and will no doubt continue to inspire my improvement in the art and skill of speedrunning this great game.
Thanks to GarrettChan for agreeing to me using a clip of his UV Max + Reality run in 6:12 (26th Jan 2020), which set my competitive juices flowing to take on this challenge.
Thanks also to the following speedrunners who agreed to have clips included in the video (listed in order of appearance):

Pleymo - clip of his UV Speed for Doom 2's Map 23 in 0:39.46 (5th Oct 2020)
Starduster - clip of his UV Max for Scythe's Map 28 in 2:51.51 with linedef skip (28th Dec 2020)
Coincident - clip of his UV Max for Ultimate Doom's E3M5 in 2:59.49 (19th Sept 2020)
NightTerror - clip of Map 18 of his UV Max D2All for Doom 2 in 1:19:10 (2nd Dec 2020)
Daerik - clip of Map 12 of his Sunlust UV Max D2All in 4:23:47 (18th Nov 2020)

For many weeks, I had contemplated whether I was willing to straferun in order to compete with GarrettChan's 6:12 record. I decided to take the plunge on 9th May 2021, thereby dropping my aversion to straferunning in original maps of Ultimate Doom and Doom 2. That aversion was based on unfamiliarity with a technique which I used to think drove a cart and horses through the intended route of some maps. However, I have practised the method in Scythe and become a great deal more comfortable with it, a process helped by watching other speedrunners hone their skills. Removing my self-imposed restriction will allow me to compete in many more Reality challenges - it's all very exciting!
It's fitting that I have reached this decision on a map I enjoy very much, even though YouTube compression frowns upon the Fireblu walls. Sandy Petersen made a great map in Mount Erebus, which eschews linearity and right angles to create an unforgettable experience.

In my earlier attempts, I used an approximate form of tic counting to make the first crossing of lava towards the vine building. Tic counting uses the fact that poison can only cause injury when the level time is 1 tic more than a multiple of 32 tics.
In my previous E3M6 video 'Ultimate Doom E3M6 No Damage Completion, with Live Commentary - Starts from Attempt #1', also published in May 2021, I discovered that starting that first crossing of lava at 17 seconds consistently avoided damage from the poison. Since 11 seconds = 1 tic more than 12x32 tics, we can also start the journey at 17 - 11 = 6 seconds, as this is only 1 tic different relative to the multiples of 32 tics.
I found I could start the journey on 6 seconds, or just after 5 seconds, or just after 4 seconds, with high success rates of avoiding damage because the weapon-bobbing cycle repeats every 0.91 seconds. In future speedruns, I may be able to develop further the idea of using the 'ideal' time for tic counting and making adjustments that compromise a little safety in exchange for speed (not having to wait up to 32 seconds for the next ideal opportunity).
As I continued grinding on E3M6, though, I noticed that firing three bullets at the shotgun guy, grabbing his weapon and using SR40 to grab shells on the floor while just missing the tree meant that I didn't get hurt on my way to the vine building - the timing just became consistent through trial and error.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments, I'd love to hear from you!
