Ultimate Way to Play Switch Handheld! Mount Your Switch to a Pro Controller with Fixture Gaming S1
121In this video, we unbox and test out the Fixture Gaming Founder's Edition of the S1, a fixture that allows you to mount your Nintendo Switch to your Pro Controller.
One of my biggest criticisms of the original Switch is I've never thought it was very comfortable in handheld mode. Before I modded the left JoyCon with a D-pad, I didn't like the lack of a D-pad, I thought it was too wide and just uncomfortable. I really liked the Switch Lite in handheld mode, but that required a $200 investment and sharing save data is kind of a pain. That's where the folks at Fixture Gaming come to save the day with their S1 Mount.
There are 2 versions of the S1, what they call the Founder's Edition which is 3D printed and an injection-molded version, which is shipping later. The version they sent me was a Founder's Edition, which you can have customized with your own name or custom name right into it, pretty sweet! There are also 2 color versions, either all-black or with red and blue accents that match the red and blue JoyCons.
The Switch itself attaches to the S1 through the JoyCon rails, and initially, you may have a little difficulty getting the Switch all the way down on the rail. Don't force it but have confidence that it will eventually slide all the way down. The Pro Controller simply snaps into place in the bottom of the S1. To install it, angle the back of the Pro Controller into the S1 fixture and from there snap the front down into place.
In addition to the Nintendo Pro Controller, I did also try other similar controllers from PowerA, Old Skool and KMD. The only one that worked at all was the KMD Pro Controller, and while a little loose on the backside, my Switch never slid around in the S1 mount with the KMD controller. NICE!
When I began testing the S1, I instantly fell in love. I was concerned that it may feel top-heavy or unbalanced but that was absolutely not the case. The balance felt terrific, I was able to adjust the angle of the screen perfectly to my preference for either sitting upright or lying in bed. I did initially have the Switch mounted incorrectly, with it only sliding to the top of the rail, but after a little bit of fiddling with it, I was able to get it to slide it down and into place where it needs to be.

- Maybe initially difficult to slide down the rails and mount properly
- High demand means it may be a bit before you get yours
- Some may not like 3D printed compared to injection molded
- Not compatible with the Switch Lite
Should You Buy One?
I have played my Switch more in handheld mode since receiving the S1 than I think I ever have when not traveling. It makes playing with the Pro Controller on the go so convenient. I don't know about you but when I fly, I don't have enough room to put the tray table down to play via Tabletop Mode. Plus if we hit turbulence my Switch can get bounced around. The S1 gives me a super-sturdy, adjustable platform to play from, and I totally dig it!
