69Uncharted 5 is LIKELY in Development...
In this video, I discuss Uncharted 5 and the rumors and leaks surrounding its supposed development. Over a year ago, an Uncharted Reboot 'leak' began floating around and after researching and finding out more context a year later, it seems as though Uncharted 5 is likely in development. I say LIKELY, because this development could very much be something else, or it could be a reboot to the Uncharted series. Either way, this comes both as a great surprise (if true), but equally a skeptical worry.
Apparently, Bend Studio (formerly known as Sony Bend), not only may be working on Uncharted 5 (or an Uncharted Reboot), but was also involved in the development of the now cancelled, The Last of Us Online project! This 'news' appears to have been out there for awhile, with Sony Bend working as a support-studio for Naughty Dog. Still remaining unclear at least to me, whether or not it's true. Nonetheless, this would mean that Naughty Dog has been developing the same IPs for over a decade now, so it would be great to see the studio work on something separate. However, I can't shake how happy I'd be with Naughty Dog developing another Uncharted game! The Uncharted series has been one of my favorite game experiences, thus if the rumors are true that Bend Studio is at the helm of developing a reboot or sequel to Uncharted, then I'm a bit worried... Considering the studios otherwise "sketchy" past with the 2019 release of Days Gone, which didn't come without its issues.
Although I do like Bend Studio and believe they have the power to influence the current gen console, I'd much prefer the studio avoid touching the Uncharted series and instead surprise fans with Days Gone 2, another Syphon Filter game, or perhaps a completely new, realized, IP. Have Naughty Dog develop another Uncharted game, followed by a new IP. With The Last of Us Online project now cancelled, it would be a bit of a shame to see Naughty Dog stick with a SAFE IP like Uncharted, however it's theirs and they know it best. Rather than passing the torch to Bend Studio, I believe it's in PlayStation's interest (if the rumors/leaks are true), to have Naughty Dog spearhead its development.
On the discussion of PlayStation, I think their executives have failed fans more than once and if they don't continue to push out quality first party titles, this may negatively impact their overall sales and consumer confidence in the brand. With PlayStation games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Days Gone, and Horizon Zero Dawn touching PC platforms already being an example of that. With The Last of Us Online cancelled and Guerilla Games creating a Multiplayer experience held in the Horizon series, and now with the passing of the torch to a lesser known, perhaps under-representative studio like Bend Studio to create UNCHARTED — all of these appeared decisions impacting the brand in what I believe to be a negative way.
