Under The Skin - Stage 1: Coco Town
122Here begins my walkthrough of the story mode in the PlayStation 2 game Under The Skin.
Cosmi comes from the Mischief Planet where inhabitants who turn three must pass a test by causing proper mischief on other planets. Unfortunately Cosmi has so far failed the test repeatedly and as a last-ditch effort is now headed for the most barbaric and dangerous planet known: Earth. Nobody has ever passed the test there, and anyone who did would be considered a hero.
In this game you disguise yourself as a regular human and go around the stages playing tricks on people, which causes them to drop coins. If you play tricks on people in quick succession you can get a combo which increases the amount of coins dropped and coins are needed to pass the stage.
When you "prank" people they naturally become mad at you and begin to chase and attack you. When in disguise you can normally take one hit relatively safely as the first hit makes you only lose your clothing and walk around in your (or Earthlings') underwear, but a second hit turns you back into your real form which makes you lose some of your coins and freaks out everyone who sees you. In your true form you lose more coins if you get hit and cannot play any pranks.
You can get a new disguise by zapping any human and running to a UFO to change. Changing disguises makes people stop chasing you, but most importantly it is also the way to replenish your stock of "trick" items.
Each stage pairs you up with another alien, usually as an opponent to beat, who are bound by the same rules as you are and are indeed often the greatest source of coins if you manage to hit them twice before they are able to change disguises.
Each stage also has a unique "panic time" mode where something crazy will be happening to mix things up, and in this first stage it's rush hour which causes cars to drive faster and not stop for people on the road.
The game gives you a final grade on your performance after the end credits, and it deducts points for failures as well as for saving mid-game.
It's a pretty fun game, although a bit on the short side. I don't think the Scarlett Johansson film version is very true to the game's plot, but isn't that always the case with video game movies.
