you follow her as she gets her own room for the first time, heads off to college, goes through a difficult break up, and finally starts a family of her own, and it does all of this without telling you anything!
What seems like an incredibly simple concept of taking things out of a box and putting them on a shelf is actually an incredibly thoughtful story driven game with almost no dialog to mention. Everthing you pull out of a box tells you something about who you are, where you are, what your passions are, even your relationships.
The presence of a dradel suggests the character is Jewish. The increasing amount of video games suggests she's really into gaming. The art supplies and musical instruments tell a story of your passions. From move to move you can conclude you're moving in to a college dorm, or in the home of a man with some money and fine taste. As you unpack, putting your stuff next to his you get the overwhelming feeling that things just aren't gonna work out... spoiler... they don't
On the surface you might think unpacking would be a relaxing, chill game with a quiet vibe you can play on a rainy afternoon while sipping some tea... in reality its a torture session trying to figure out how you're going to fit all your underwear in this tiny drawer and where am I gonna put the freekin ruler!
You can't just take everything out of its box and put it on the floor either. Like a puzzle each item has its place... kind of.. you CAN put a frying pan in the bathroom if you want, but you're not going to proceed to the next level unless you put it someplace that makes sense... like the kitchen.
Its surprisingly stressful but addictive. As much as I wanted to go to bed before 1am I couldn't stop till I made sure the stuffed chicken and her ever growing family of stuffed chicks were all together on one shelf.
Each move you gain more stuff too. More games, More underwear, and you carry along the things you've had for years. The stuffed pig you've had since you were a child. it moves every time you do, and its starting to show its age.
the pixely graphic style, which is inspired by early video games fits incredibly well and even feels like it would be the preffered style of the person you are playing some how. However it is this same graphic style that can hinder some aspects of the game. It can be a little bit difficult to determine what something is, making it difficult to know where it goes... like this thing... what is this thing?!... I know what this is.. thats a game cube... but what is this thing?!
Other than that its really hard to pick out any major flaws with unpacking. Its a well written story based puzzle game with no story and no puzzles. It can be both relaxing to organize your book collection as well as increasingly stressful trying to find a space for your pots and pans. Its certainly not going to be a game for everyone. Theres no action, no cut scenes and no seasonal game pass. Which is fine by me. Though I would welcome a DLC.. maybe packing?! So I can put my underwear in a bedroom box.. and not with my kitchen appliances.
Unpacking is developed by witch beam studios and published by Humble games. Its available on PC, Nintendo switch and xbox. Its $19.99 or you can play it with xbox game pass. Theres an affiliate link in the description to the publishers website, buying it there will help out the channel and a portion of every purchase on HumbleBundle goes to charity.
So if you love moving from one home to another organizing all your little knick knacks, or trying to fit your anime action figures in with someone elses aclectic collection of fine art pieces. Than making unpacking is the game for you.
