The Goddess Rea has gone silent, The ancient tree cleaved at its trunk, and the corruption has begun to spread throughout the land taking everything it touches with it.
Its now upto the Bergson Family to track down and destroy the source of the dark corruption by gathering the three spirits of Rea, and opening the gate to the top of Mount Morta
You start off as John, a strong experienced fighter, an expert with a sword and shield. as you battle you'll gain experience, find treasure, and level your self up. using the skill tree you can increase you battle worthiness with new abilities, increased damage or defense, additionally, You'll find temporary skills that can help you in battle such as increased damage, XP or battle Partners.
Enemies you've slain will often times drop health potions, Gem Stones, (used to open some chests) or morv, the in game currency. Chests can also be found throughout the game filled with more morv, health potions and even more buffs to give you character a little more of a fighting chance, however, if you fall in battle you will be returned to the safety of the Bergsons Home without any of the buffs you acquired in this round
As the game progresses you'll unlock addition family members, each with their own special fighting abilities, skill tree, and weapons. You select your character at the beginning of each round. Additional Characters like uncle Ben and Grandma Margaret stay behind but can be used to upgrade your characters weapons, armor and other abilities
Graphically, its not my cup of tea, I'm not personally a fan of pixel art graphics, however, that doesn't mean the graphics are bad! But if I don't critique something the haters will all tell me this isn't a review. Fuck you.
I quickly forgot the graphics were even pixely once I got into the game, hacking and slashing, exploring the map looking for chests, avoiding spikes, and just trying to get as far as I could before death came knocking on my door was more than enough to distract me from the graphic design of the game.
The maps are procedurally generated so your experience changes with each attempt, and the narrated story is so rich and inviting that I found myself personally invested in the characters, pulling me in like a good book.
Children of Morta is developed by Dead Mage and published by 11 Bit Studio. The same studio behind games like Frost punk, and This war of mine.
