So for those of you who wanted me to revisit golf with friends vs golf it? Well to bad those games are dead to me. Only walkabout mini golf lives now!
on the surface its pretty much just mini golf with a computer strapped to your head
Theres a front 9 and a back 9 or you can play all 18. theres 8 courses to choose from with 2 settings each. Normal and hard. To unlock the hard mode courses you can either complete the normal course with a score below par, or collect the secret balls hidden at each hole. The secret balls serve as a fun little side quest at each hole, theres red balls, blue balls, dirty balls... so many balls to choose from. Over 188 in total.
Hard mode courses forgo the hidden balls for a little fox hunt side quest, a scavenger hunt if you will. Hidden notes leave clues to find the next hidden note, following through with all the little notes and clues will unlock a special putter, and its not some thoughtless gimmick of a quest. Some of the clue actually cause you to think about your surroundings, double back to holes you've already been to and explore the map that lies beyond the 18 holes.
Of course what fun would mini golf be if you were playing it by yourself? Multiplayer is absolutely seamless and supports upto 5 players per room. To play multiplayer you select the multiplayer option, name your room, now you have a room, tell your friends that room name, now they're in your room. It never needs to be any harder than that. Its even has a function if you have a friend that wants to jump in mid game, do you let them watch? Let them catch up? Or kick them out like your drunk uncle at thanks giving who sticks around way to late after everyone else has already left
well thats it right? A perfect mini golf game. Close, but no. No other VR game has ever caused me to spin around more than walkabout mini golf. Sure theres a button thats supposed to take you right to your ball in swinging position. If you like to stand on your ball while you're swinging it, and although I understand why its a single controller game, I wish there was an option for 2 controllers so I could properly display my excitement when I nail a hole in one. Also wheres the rest of my body? And why can't I ride the sheep?!
Character customization is available and according to the developers website there are over a quadrillion combinations, I haven't personally confirmed that but with tons of different options for hair, eye wear, facial hair and outfits for your underhead. I'm gonna take the developers word for it.
In game options are limited to putter settings, movement settings, audio and general game features.
Don't expect a wide array or customization because you won't find any, no funny ball shapes, no reduced gravity or collision. And as of so far I haven't seen any way to put a hat on your ball.
Despite the lack of customization, bodies, and sheep riding. Walkabout mini golf is still a wonderful, and addictive VR experience.
walk up to your ball, swing, miss the hole by a mile, curse... thats mini golf! It really doesnt need to be much more than that. But the hidden balls, fox hunt stories, and the ability to fly around pretending to be an FPV drone adds just enough spice to make it one of those fun party games you can play with your all your shut in friends while you talk about your social anxiety disorder and agoraphobia.
Walk about mini golf is developed by Mighty Coconut and is available on Oculus Quest, Rift, Steam VR and Viveport. And has full crossplay between all platforms
so if you like mini golf without the glow in the dark black light carpets, or feeling like you're being rushed by the PGA hopefuls behind you trying to get a course speed record, than maybe walkabout mini golf is the game for you
