The Nintendo 3DS (apparently) can't handle Unreal Engine, says Mark Rein of Epic Games

When asked about developing for the Nintendo 3DS, Mark Rein of Epic Games (the folks behind Gears of War and Shadow Complex) has said that he believes the hardware cannot handle Unreal Engine, the set of tools they use to develop their games. He does say that this is an assumption and they haven't played around with the 3DS, but it's an odd assumption to make. One of their recent games, Epic Citadel runs on Unreal Engine and it's designed for the iPhone 3GS. I'm not a genius when it comes to tech specs, but you can be assured that the 3DS is much more powerful than a phone, meaning there shouldn't be any problems when it comes to hardware limitations. Now, I don't think anyone expected Epic Games to port any of their projects to the 3DS, but leaving Unreal Engine incompatible with the 3DS could unfortunately scare off a few developers from the platform if they're reliant on the engine. Bit of a bummer.

First details of Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs 3DS (it's an on-rails shooter with lots of dialogue and cutscenes)

Keen for some classic animated space western action? Well that's a very specific thing to be keen for, but you're in luck! Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs 3DS (which is based on the TV series of the same name) was announced a couple of months back and we've got a first bunch of details. Chris Straub of Fireharzard Studio has said that "the game will be an on-rails shooter, similar to Sin and Punishment 2 for the Wii, with lots of dialogues and cutscenes during and after missions." As most developers promise there's a clear focus on core gamers but with "extensive modes and options the game will be very interesting for casual gamers as well." Straub also brags that they'll be integrating "overwhelming" 3D effects, which doesn't actually sound like a positive, although it may just be an issue with the translation.

Hey guys, David here from nintendo 3ds blog dot com.

And once again we have a bit of an odd assumption being made about the Nintendo 3DS.

Mark Rein of Epic Games - the folks that make Gears of War, Shadow Complex and that kind of stuff - has said that he doesn't think the 3DS could handle Unreal Engine.

Now, to his credit, he admits that he hasn't had any time with the 3DS, but it's still an odd assumption to make because one of their games, Epic Citadel runs on Unreal Engine and it's a game for the iPhone 3GS. And the 3DS is, without a doubt, more powerful than the iPhone 3GS.

You may be wondering: why does this matter? I don't think anyone really expected Gears of War to come to the 3DS, after all. But the problem is that a lot of developers use Unreal Engine, and if it doesn't support the 3DS it could stop a few developers from coming to the platform.

Hopefully Epic Games come to their senses at some point in the near future though.

Aside from that, the only other news story today is related to Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs animated space western that was popular a couple of decades ago.

Anyways, a game based on the TV series was already confirmed for the 3DS a while back, but we now know that it's going to be an on-rails shooter with a lot of dialogue and cutscenes.

Oh, and one of the developers of the game compares it to Sin and Punishment 2 on the Wii, if you needed a clearer picture.
