There are a few ways of getting a server setup for Valheim, and here I walk through the steps for using SteamCMD on Windows, although on Linux it's very very similar.


✅ Download SteamCMD from https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD

✅ Extract in Folder

✅ Open command prompt - Navigate to Folder - Run steamcmd.exe
✅ force_install_dir c:\SteamCMD\Valheim\ to set install directory
✅ login anonymous
✅ app_update 896660
✅ exit
✅ In windows explorer folder navigate to folder.
✅ Make a copy of the bat file
✅ Set server name, world, password (min 5 characters) and take note of port forwarding!
✅ Review pdf file.
✅ Double click to run bat file and start server.
✅ Click accept on windows firewall.
✅ Set up your port forwarding
✅ Connect to game locally to verify.
✅ ctrl-c to close server
✅ Saves files in C:\Users\USER\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds
✅ Copy/zip the .db and .fwl files
✅ Take note, latest patch of Valheim appears to have a backup .old file for db and fwl, to help resilience. Copy as well if you need to.
