how did it all begin?
Some time ago Velvet Assassin was called Sabotage, and even earlier - Sabotage 1943. In the service record of the authors, a small German company Replay Studios, there is only one game, and that does not have even a distant relation to the stealth - it is a killer car arcade Crashday.
What's it about?
The story of spy Violet Summer is not taken from the ceiling by the screenwriters. The main character has a real historical prototype - Violette Jabot. Throughout the twelve missions brave woman will be alone to perform the most difficult assignments in the territory of the enemy. Nothing original the writers, however, did not come up with: blowing up an important facility, killing an officer, stealing top-secret papers - any homegrown Sam Fisher coped with similar tasks more than once.
How does it play?
Velvet Assassin is played like any other purebred stealth action game. Hide in the shadows from the clusters of enemies, distract them one by one in a secluded place (it requires a lot of noise) and then deal with them in the most brutal ways the developers could think of. The bloodthirstiness of the game will outstrip anything - Violetta has saved about two dozen different tricks for her victims. One of the favorites is pulling the pin of the grenade right on your enemy's belt.
And that's how the whole game. Waited for a moment, attacked and the next Kraut - no zest. At a stretch can be called such, except for the use of morphine. Heroine sometimes gets this drug on the way, and if it is used, everything around changes: the world is colored in different colors, Violetta begins to walk around in her underwear, and the enemies cease to show any interest in the half-naked woman. This peculiarity is more or less clearly explained by the plot: at the beginning of the game Violetta lies unconscious in a hospital bed, and all the events that take place are nothing more than memories.
The authors also introduced a role-playing element to Velvet Assassin for some reason. We gradually earn experience points, which can later be spent on the development of three values: strength, spy skills and morphine. But all of this in fact turns out to be useless. For example, pumping the second parameter increases the speed of crouching, which does not give much noticeable advantage.
How does it look and sound?
The main thing the developers can be proud of is a perfect atmosphere, that was achieved thanks to the stylish pictures and fitting soundtrack. You can always see the talent - it was proved by the artists from Replay Studios, who, despite the very backward technology, drew a very effective world.
Failure?
That's not to say that the developers made an abysmal game. On the one hand, it has all the basic features of the stealth genre. But on the other hand, Velvet Assassin woefully lacks something of its own, something special. The process of uninterrupted killing of German soldiers becomes monotonous and even routine after a while. In addition, the situation is aggravated by numerous conventions: for example, if the enemy loses sight of you, he will continue to go quietly about his business. But this is a great atmosphere, so maybe you will find some fans after all.
