The Virtual Boy is one of Nintendo's greatest failures, and it's finally time to take a look at why it bombed so horribly! Faulty electronics, a lacking game library, headache inducing red lights, uncomfortable stands, and high launch cost all contributed to the Virtual Boy's demise, but is it all really that bad? If you can get past the wall of defects that I just mentioned, then it does have a redeeming title or two (out of a North America library of only 14 games), and it's definitely something that I would recommend trying out at least once. It would be really cool to see some of it's games featured for download on the 3DS's eShop, or maybe even remade with full color and better 3D effects.

Overall it was an interesting experiment by Nintendo in a time when they wanted to release a console to tide people over until the Nintendo 64 was released, and combat against other 32-bit consoles such as the PlayStation and 3DO. Gunpei Yokoi was the man behind the project, and he had already seen much success with the Game Boy and Game & Watch which were his earlier projects. Unfortunately a high production cost and rushed development period led to the Virtual Boy (originally known as the VR-32) not being what Gunpei Yokoi had originally envisioned, and it ended up becoming one of Nintendo's biggest failures as a result.

So what are your experiences with the Virtual Boy? Have you ever tried playing one before? Did you get a headache or feel dizzy as so many people have claimed has happened to them? Did you find it uncomfortable to use? Did you enjoy any of the games that you played? Let me know in the comments below, as I would love to hear about other people's experiences with one of Nintendo's most obscure "portable" consoles!
