Wall Running in DOOM + DOOM II, E1M9 (Rerelease, Aug 9, 2024)
Aug 9, 2024. I found a glitch in the physics engine that allows wall-running in DOOM + DOOM II, in the PC Steam version I downloaded August 9, 2024. I am playing Doom 1, E1M9 (Episode 1, Mission 9, which is the hidden level found whose exit is found in E1M3).
The game has auto-run by default, which is nice. Though game purists will notice that it's for power players only (most of us today, since the game is decades old) and this ruins the original creeping feeling of uncertainty when you first played the game. With new level packs, you may wish to shut this off, and experience the original days of old. Gaming was often better back then. ;)
With auto-run, you get used to running speed. But you'll notice that you can "wall run" even faster! It appears to be about 2x the speed.
Hardware:
- Alienware m18 R2
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 16GB GDDR6 (laptop version)
- 14th Gen Intel Core i9 14900HX (24-Core, 36MB L3 Cache, up to 5.8GHz Max Turbo Frequency)
- (16 E-Cores, and 8 P-Cores hyperthreaded = 32 V-Cores total)
- 64 GB: 2 x 32 GB, DDR5, 5200 MT/s, non-ECC, dual-channel
- 18" FHD+ (1920 x 1200) 480Hz, 3ms, ComfortView Plus, NVIDIA G-SYNC + DDS, 100% DCI-P3, FHD IR Camera
I have bought Doom and Doom II many times over since 1993, and this one finally has two features that are a must, IMHO:
1. full-screen play without the HUD, for full immersion -- hmm, actually, I cannot delete the icons/numbers in full screen setting 11 -- that's a bummer :( They are so big and distracting, that it's better to just have the entire HUD bar visible.
2. unlimited framerate (which is 480 Hz on my Alienware m18 R2).

Anyone who already owns Doom 1 and Doom 2 will have this available for free.
The game's UX is done very well. It has great level packs, such as No Rest for the Living, and has a great selection screen, without the slow start up / wait times. It even allows playing the original in DOSBox. Be sure to maximize that HUD, and press F5 to get into 160x200 low resolution Mode-X for highest framerate :) (not actually needed, since even full resolution rocks at the 35 Hz max the game allowed).
