Wargames Factory- Celt Warband unearthed and built!
I came across one of these really cheap the other day, and seeing as how I'd like to put together some small historical skirmish forces, it seemed like a good deal.
It was- to a degree. While the sculpts are quite adequate, they are definitely showing their age compared to some of the newer historical kits out there (like the Victrix offerings especially).
I do like that there are slings offered as an option, as you don't see those enough. The biggest offense is that the poses look really awkward. Its hard to tell which arms go with which body, and a lot of them just look plain strange regardless of what weapon they're holding. I had a terrible time trying to get any reasonably positioning out of them.
I also didn't care for the fact that their javelins are longer than their spears- shouldn't it be the other way around? It also looks a bit strange in regards to how they hold the shield and javelins, as they don't actually hold them. The javelins just sort of float around nearby their hands.
Close enough I guess.
I'd say the Warlord Celts are a better deal and much simpler to get on the table, while the Victrix kit offers up a lot more variation (and models!) but the price reflects that as well.
Still, encountering ones of these boxes on the cheap isn't so bad. You get plenty of bodies and they take to customizing with other similarly sized parts fairly easily. They can easily fill in for all sorts of ancient tribesmen types, which is exactly what I plan on doing with them, despite their shoddy paint jobs.
