We Learn the DARK TRUTH What Happened in the PAST! - Return From Core

We made it to level 5 which is the final layer we can explore as of the launch of the game. This area is disgusting looking and it has a dangerous virus in the air.
We head over to the mysterious signal we got upon arriving on this level together with Joe. Turns out it was a mutated monster who had the items of one of the expedition members from 50 years ago. Not far from here we hear some fighting going on, we rush to the sight to see that the Apostle and Kena (the experimental subject from level 5) are fighting one another. Kena runs away as we arrive and we get to fight the Apostle. Still as weak as he was before we easily beat him. However, Joe has gotten very sick from whatever it is that is hanging in the air here. There is a pretty sad cutscene, ending in his death as he turns into one of the mutated monsters. We pass out and wake up in Core Town, turns out we were rescued by someone. We decided to talk to researcher Simon and ask if humans can suddenly change into monsters, he says it is theoretically possible if an abrupt change in genes happens and a virus could do that. With this new info, we head to Lillith to see if she knows more about this. She finally opens up about what happened in the past on the surface. The humans were working on something that would make them immortal, during phase one of this project they made the experimental subjects (Lilith and the other girls). They got injected with something called Protein E which gives them the power to live way longer than humans could as well as stronger. In fear that they would rebel against humans, they invented a virus they named virus DE. This targets the protein E in their body and will slowly and painfully kill them turning them into goo. To get the results they wanted they made a drug with the protein E in it. Taking this in small doses they managed to extend the average life spent to 93 in just 30 years time. This protein E has become part of the human genes and is carried over from mother to child. However, something went wrong and the virus DE leaked out of its container and spread all over Earth. It nearly wiped out humanity and in a desperate attempt to survive they dug underground as the virus only works if it has enough UV rays. Turns out level 5 is the lowest it can go before the virus can't affect anyone anymore. Lilith is unsure why we are not affected as badly but gives us the recipe for a gas mask just in case. This requires some hard to get items so will be something for later as instead we go check up on Kena to see how she is doing. Of course, this led to yet another boss battle but our op candy cane defeats everyone. She is surprised to learn that we were not with them (the immortals) and tells us they are looking for the people who led the first expedition 50 years ago.
We put the main quest on hold for a while as we got some heartwarming quests. Cartier is the first one to reach level 5 and we became her beloved friend.
