The game consists of a series of attacks on moving steam trains, displayed in two-dimensional profile. On odd-numbered levels, the game is configured as a side-scrolling beat-em-up; on even-numbered levels, it's a fixed-screen shooter, with automatic scrolling only when moving from one train to the next.
The game, scrolling is left to right in some levels and right to left in others.

You use a joystick for movement and two buttons: A to attack, B to dodge attacks and other hazards (only on even-numbered levels).

You have multiple lives, which can be increased by reaching certain scores. Each level corresponds to a train, they are infinite, but with ever-increasing difficulty.

In the odd-numbered levels, you control the outlaw on foot and unarmed, capable of jumping, ducking in various ways, and punching and kicking. Each level begins with a hand-to-hand fight, next to the railroad tracks, with a teller from the bank you just robbed; you must eliminate him before the train departs, after which you can dodge or eliminate some running coyotes as a bonus. The outlaw then climbs onto the train and walks across the roofs of the cars that serve as platforms, where he will be forced to engage the men opposing him. These are individual fights, one per car, like the initial one, although some enemies are armed; some throw bottles, some carry rifles, some brandish coal shovels, and so on. The outlaw must also duck to avoid bumping into the railway signs and tunnel walls, or his health will be reduced; signs and tunnels are announced by a white exclamation point that briefly appears on the screen. You always start from the last car to reach the locomotive, where a rich loot is located.
Hit points are used; for each encounter with an enemy, you have a health bar, initially half full, which applies to both sides: if it's empty, the outlaw loses a life; if it's completely full, the enemy is defeated. You can also lose a life directly by taking too long to move from one car to another; a bomb will blow the couplings and the cars will separate, causing the robber to fall off the train.

Starting at the fifth level, an enemy that cannot be eliminated will occasionally appear: a Native American lurking in some trees near the railway, armed with a bow and arrow, which he uses to attack the outlaw.

On even levels, the robber, armed with a pistol and galloping on his horse, approaches the moving train.

Here too, you start from the last car to reach the locomotive, always intent on stealing the loot hidden within. The outlaw, who appears with his back turned to the horse in profile, can move in all directions, forward and backward, and closer or further from the train. He can fire unlimited bullets and adjusts his shots using a crosshair that moves across the top of the screen, following the horse's movements.

To complete each level, you must shoot the men who gradually appear from the freight cars or from the windows after opening the curtain. They attack using firearms or by throwing objects at the outlaw. There is a time limit to eliminate all enemies in each car, and if successful, the scene advances to the next car. As mentioned, in the arcade version, the player can use the B button to defend themselves: pressing it will cause the outlaw to duck, thus dodging enemy attacks. In later levels, a flying vulture also appears as an enemy, which must be avoided with this move; however, it can be eliminated with a shot.

Every now and then, a woman, the robber's accomplice, appears from the train and offers a bag of money, which means bonus points. You can shoot the money, but you mustn't hit the woman, or a life will be lost. Other bags of money are carried by birds. There are also hidden bonus points to hit on the locomotive. According to the arcade manual, you can overtake a car first by breaking its coupling with repeated shots.
