South Korea had never won a match at the FIFA World Cup in their five tournaments between 1954 and 1998. But in 2002 they co-hosted the FIFA World Cup and won a couple of games in the group stages against Poland and Portugal. Controversially, they beat Italy in the last 16, and then Spain in the quarter finals before finally bowing out of the tournament to Germany and finishing fourth. They have yet to return to that stage.
