Opponents of the Golden Goal rule stated that it froze defences of teams because it killed games dead in their tracks because of a goal. European Championship finals of 1996 between Germany and Czech Republic and 2000 between France and Italy were won off the back of a Golden Goal whilst teams like Paraguay and Italy both exited tournaments via the golden goal rule.
