What is a "SKYBOX" in video games?
3,199Have you ever been so overwhelmed by a game's environment that you just had to stop and take it all in? Well, chances are, you were probably admiring a skybox.
As the name implies a skybox is generally what makes up the sky in a video game - but it’s also a technique for generating backgrounds in general so you might even see a ‘skybox’ in an unusual place, like underground, underwater, or even in outer space.
From the early days of the PS1 and the N64 to the current generation of gaming hardware like the PS5 and the Series X, video game worlds have always been imaginative and captivating. Halo, Uncharted, Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us, Breath of the Wild... All of these games have been credited with having incredible game worlds and a big part of the reason why - is all thanks to the skybox.
