About this video: In this video, I show you exactly what the difference is between Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper servers. I also go over what server software you should you use in this video, so you can make sure you are running the most lag free and best server you possibly can!
So what is the difference between a Bukkit server, a Spigot server, and a Paper server? Well, first things first, they can all run Bukkit plugins. This is because Spigot is a distribution/fork of Bukkit. Paper is then a distribution/fork of Spigot. Thus, Bukkit can only run plugins made for Bukkit. Spigot can run plugins made for Bukkit and Spigot, and Paper can run plugins made for Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper. With that being said, plugins aren't the only differences between these 3 Minecraft server distributions.
Bukkit is the original way plugins were added to Minecraft. It allowed incredible plugins like World Edit, MCMMO, and Essentials to come to life. The problem with Bukkit though is the code is very inefficient. It isn't optimized well at all, and its a pretty sloppy setup. This caused problems as Minecraft servers wanted to go from having 10 friends online to hundreds of thousands of players online with multiple servers.
Thus, Spigot was born. Spigot takes and optimizes the Bukkit code making it a bit more efficient. Spigot also works with Bungeecord allowing you to hook multiple servers together at one time. This is helpful when you are running those large network servers with thousands of players like our server Play.BreakdownCraft.com. Spigot also does have some additional plugin support that Bukkit doesn't have. For example, some of World Edit's features only work in Spigot. If you try them on Bukkit, they just won't work.
Spigot isn't without its faults though, and overtime, Spigot has also became less focused on optimizing and reducing lag. So, in 2017, a group of developers got together and started the completely open-source project Paper. This is a distribution of Spigot with an extremely active development community that is focused on making Minecraft servers as efficient and lag free as possible. Paper is feature rich with lag reduction option. Even adding async chunk loading to Minecraft something that helps server performance incredibly, but something that Spigot removed with 1.12.2.
Overall though, which server software should you run? Well, the answer is pretty simple. You should always run Paper if it is possible. Paper has an incredibly active development community that has some of the best Java developers Minecraft has ever seen it. They are extremely quick and effective at fixing bugs, and they build the most effienct Minecraft server software we have ever seen. They even have fixes that can help entity and hopper lag built right into the server jar. Additionally, if you are running Spigot, installing Paper is as simple as replace the server's jar file.
