On April 14, 1988, the guided missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts suffered serious damage when it hit an underwater mine in the Persian Gulf. The United States discovered that the aforementioned mine was developed in Iran. America responded with Operation Praying Mantis, an effort to disable Iran's navy and make it less of a danger to international maritime lanes. U.S. naval forces initiated a series of synchronized strikes during the course of the operation. The Iranian frigate Sahand was severely damaged after coming into contact with the USS Wainwright, a guided-missile cruiser. The USS Enterprise CVN-65's air wing annihilated the Iranian warship Joshan and many smaller boats in a coordinated airstrike. Another Iranian oil platform, which had been utilized for military purposes, was destroyed in a strike. Tensions in the region rose momentarily as a result of this successful US Navy operation. This did not, however, escalate into an all-out war between the United States and Iran. The Iran-Iraq War was officially declared over in August 1988 after an agreement was brokered as a result of Operation Paying Mantis.
