Whisker Squadron Survivor - New on-rails shooter roguelite game! My first run and thoughts so far!
Whisker Squadron Survivor is a new on-rails shooter with roguelike mechanics. It came out August 21, 2023, and was developed and published by Flippfly LLC. It is currently still in Early Access.
I have only played a brief time (about twenty minutes), but so far I feel like I can sink some time into this game! It is much different than the standard rogue games I play because of the fact it is on on-rails shooter, which I thought was an interesting combination.
The controls feel nice and responsive, but I did feel a bit sluggish. It being a rogue, I am sure there are abilities from level-ups that speed you up, but I didn't get much in my first run. I am guessing that you unlock more upgrades and such as you play. It was weird getting use to combat at first, but after flying for a while, it started to get much easier.
I like the audio, but I wish there was spoken dialog in the game. I didn't really pay attention to the conversations because I was focused on flying and trying to survive. Not a huge deal, but when it is chaotic, you don't really want to take your eyes off of the action.
The enemies feel really different. Once you get use to an enemy's attacks, you get a good sense of how to dodge them, but then in the next zone, it has completely new moves that throw you off. You have to be fast to adapt as the game is on-rails, but with practice, this should become much easier (after killing the same enemies a few dozen times). I am sad I was so close to beating the first boss lol! Would have been a cool first run, but that's what make rogues good! Kepp looking forward to what's next! I'll get it next time 👍
The environments and palette they used are really cool! I like the vibrant look. Going through that green portal thing where the screen shifted vertically was so cool! Glad my gamer brain kicked in and told me I had to destroy that green cube! It changed how the game felt, but wasn't super jarring. The environment was more like a dread feeling as opposed to the vibrant world I was just in, so it gave the game some really nice contrast! Also, got serious Mother Brain from Metroid vibes from the purple destructible objects you can shoot lol
The ONLY complaint I have with the geo in this game is the collision. Instead of maybe bouncing off of a wall or other surface, you get dragged through it, and that can hurt quite a bit. Maybe that's just something I have to get use to though, I am still learning how to play on-rails, it's not my usual go-to type of game.
The upgrades so far all felt standard. Weapon damage increase, shield boost/repair, new attacks etc. That's not a bad thing though, it adds a sense of familiarity when you start playing. I am interested to see what all kinds of upgrades there are. Hopefully there are a lot of cool weapons and such as well.
It seems after I finally lost in my first run that I unlocked content that can be purchased in the shop. It looks like you are able to unlock new pilots, so I am guessing they have their own ships with their own weapons and abilities. Going to have to do some runs and stack some credits before I can unlock them though.
I will post more videos as I play more, but I would suggest trying it if you are a fan of rogues, on-rail shooters or both! It's only $15 on Steam, so it's not super expensive. So far, I am having fun with it, especially after not really playing many games lately.
