I have a guilty pleasure I will reveal in this video. A deeply tragic guilty pleasure in final fantasy 14 that reminds me of back in the good old days of scene kids, emo bands and kingdom hearts of myself rushing home after playing call of duty with the bois to slam on Britney Spears on the Ipod. That guilty pleasure.

For real though time for a spicy topic that I was kind of hesitant to talk about because of my own fears around the subject. What exactly my favorite DPS job is right now that I’m playing.

I say this because there is certainly negative community perception over the jobs I enjoy and yeah I’m human too and it really does get to me and make me feel nervous.

It’s Summoner. And summoner has always been one of my favorite jobs in final fantasy 14. I’m the guy that made that literally over an hour long over 100,000 views summoner video purely from passion.

That same love I have for it is gone absolutely no where. In fact I find the current iteration of the summoner more fun than ever in spite of the fact that community perception of it is to be quite frank awful.

Let’s dive into the community perceptions first, which to be frank should have little bearing on your opinion.

First up is that it’s easy. That it is small brain. That it’s rotation could be put into a single button press by using third party tools.

Secondly that it’s DPS is so incredibly vastly inferior.

Thirdly that it’s utility is so incredibly vastly inferior.

Let’s debunk the second point since that’s trivial. Pulling up a statistical analysis the DPS are incredibly close to one another. Dancer, the lowest total raid DPS is only 8.6% lower than the absolute maximum samurai. And that’s comparing a ranged physical DPS to a melee which is ridiculous and they are still only that far apart.

For summoner though compared to samurai it’s only about 5% behind.
But for the caster role summoner is slightly less than 4% behind black mage. Who also doesn’t bring combat res or additional utility beyond that.
So this DPS argument is silly. If you’re hitting enrage it’s not because of a summoner.

Also we totally don’t have on record summoners being a part of 68 of the brand new ultimate raid clears. You know the literal hardest content in the game. Now if you want something to be worried about, eye machinist’s data here and they are still doing it mindyou.

Second argument is utility. Avoiding a long dissertation on the value of each summoner has 3 solid non damaging reasons to bring it.

-Combat res. Sure they can’t do it as much as red mage and brutally hard carry -- in even savage content if you need more than a handful of revives in that quick of succession blowing both healer’s and the summoner’s swiftcast in a 60 second timeframe you’re likely dying to enrage and may as well save time. Obvious exceptions exist like in ultimate weapon’s refrain uwu.
-The ability to add a metric ton of healing every 2 minutes that yes healers can plan around because 2 minutes is a very reliable timeframe.
-And most importantly mobility, which allows you to resolve mechanics and help the group perform those oh-so desirable melee uptime strats even easier. Moving on before I start prattling on why this is so valuable.

Now this gets to the third point that it’s easy which is one I’ve really wrangled with. That it’s easy and so I should feel bad.

Let’s debunk this numerically. Look at this graph. This shows the percentile ranges from the lowest percentiles to the bleeding edge absolute highest of the highest percentiles.

I call this the skill expression bar. And as you can see summoner does in fact have a pretty long skill expression bar. Numerically this is from roughly 6.4 thousand to 8.4 thousand. So a 2 thousand DPS difference. Samurai as a comparison has roughly the same 2 thousand DPS difference between min and max.
