Monopoly is a board game that was first published in 1935. It is a board game about monopolising other players by forcing them into bankruptcy through the collection of similar coloured property sets and building houses and hotels on those properties to make their prices sky rocket. Monopoly has featured in many family game nights and the nostalgia attached to a game of monopoly is strong and well embedded in people's memories.
However, there are many flaws that exist in Monopoly. With the board gaming hobby resurging in the last decade, the importance on Monopoly seems uncomparable when there are a plethora of different games out there to play.
Settlers of Catan is a board that that is often used as a gateway game into other Modern Board Games. It is a board game about gathering one of the five different resources including sheep, wood, ore, wheat and brick. Players are going to be building settlements and cities on hex tiles and moving the robber around the map to block production and steal resources.
Settlers of Catan has a far more vivid and interactive nature to it. The idea of building a civilisation and engaging in real time trade deals with the other players that doesn't drag the game on for hours is so very sweet.
