In Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows you needed a 3rd party program like Nero that would create a virtual disk drive or it would extract an ISO or IMG file. Then you could burn it to a DVD then run it.

Windows 8 has made this a simple point and click operation that allows you to simply right-click on these types of files and mount them as a virtual disk.

Windows 10 has the exact same functionality built in so you can use an ISO file just like a DVD.
