Witchaven (No Random Open-Door) - 15:47.37
Witchaven version 1.0, DOSBox version 0.74 using 180000 cycles. 180000 cycles, though arbitrary, is an appropriate balance between fast gameplay and a jump that manages to stay in the air for longer than a fraction of a second (which happens at max 100% cycles). Original video date: 2016/09/01
Timing starts on the first frame of gameplay; timing ends at the first frame of the endgame still-images.
Around 18 months ago I scoffed at the idea of speedrunning this game but, well, here we are. This game uses the Build engine, much like Duke Nukem 3D or Shadow Warrior, but it's an even earlier creation, and boy does it show. I wouldn't be surprised if the game is much more broken than this, but the initial routing allowed me to do this much, and I think it's a pretty good run to watch anyway.
The major exploits are as follows:
- Holding down the un-rebindable 'F' key (appears to be for mouselook purposes) allows you to run much faster than even the run key allows. The game isn't meant to be sped through this quickly, trust me.
- Shooting an arrow into a wall while next to it allowing you to climb that arrow immediately. This allows us to climb in areas we shouldn't be able to: note that some walls don't let arrows stick into them, though there's usually a wall somewhere that works when we need it.
- The Open Door spell opens and unlocks any one door: we pick up exactly four and use them where they save the most time. The No Random Open-Door category is another way of saying "while you CAN find more of these scrolls in chests at random, we don't use them in this run".
Apologies for the repeating sound effects: that's a game bug.
