Wonder Boy on Game Gear (called Revenge of Drancon for the North American release) is a port of the Master System game from 1987 that was itself a port from an arcade game from 1986 so by the time the Game Gear got its portable port in 1991 it was already a 5 year old game.

Adventure Island on Game Boy on the other hand was a port of Adventure Island II for the NES! This is a game that came out in 1991 so by the time the Game Boy got its portable port the game wasn't even a year old!

So really what's happening here is we're comparing a modern (at the time) game to a 5 year old game. But that said they're both great handheld ports. Being able to play a version of Wonder Boy on the go AND in color was still impressive for the time if you ask me!

Both of these ports surprised me because when I first saw "Revenge of Drancon" I had no idea what it was. So it was a surprise to find out that it's actually Wonder Boy! Adventure Island on Game Boy also surprised me because I expected it to be more like Adventure Island on NES but it turned out to be a port of Adventure Island II instead!
