Hyperkin 3-in-1 HDTV Cable (SNES, N64, GC) Kinda Sucks!
Honestly I'm still not sure how I feel about this cable. I mean one the one hand at the very least it works but on the other hand I feel like I wasted 40 bucks!
The video quality is passable at best. It does look a little sharper and has less color bleeding issues than plain old composite video BUT it introduces at least two new artifacts to the image! Sure it looks better. But not THAT much better. Not as much of a leap in sharpness that I was expecting. The cable uses S-Video internally, not RGB, so that might explain some of it but also this means that it doesn't work on the SNES Jr because that revision lacks S-Video support. Nice of them to not mention that on the box! But anyway, the video is passable at best. I mean it works and in most cases it should look a little bit better than composite and that's assuming your modern HDTV even has composite AV inputs! If your TV lacks composite inputs and you just need something to get a usable image on the screen... yeah, this works.
The other issue, maybe the bigger issue is the audio level is so low that I had to turn my TV volume up from %25 to %80 just to hear it at a normal volume! I read in some reviews people complain that the audio was distorted. I'm not sure if that's related or just another issue that some of these have as mine sounds fine once you crank your volume up way beyond what you've ever had to do before!
I also can't help notice on Amazon reviews how many people bought this cable and say it worked fine for a few weeks or a few months and then had issues. It does make me worry about the build quality of the cable. Because both sides are hard wired into the box/converter itself if you broke say the HDMI end you could be out the whole unit! I do wish the HDMI was detachable at the box to just use any normal HDMI cables you wanted. That would also make it easier for my setup as one of my HDMI cables runs from behind my receiver and sits there waiting to be used on mini consoles or other temporary use devices. Because this already has the male end coming out it means I can't use that existing HDMI cable. Again, I wish it just had the female HDMI port on the box and came with an HDMI cable instead.
Overall it's very hard to recommend this to anyone. I admit I partially bought it just out of curiosity. I wanted to try it for myself and see how well it works. I figured it would most likely be decent at best. But the minor video artifacts bring it down and the sound issue really kills it for me.
Maybe the sound issue doesn't plague them all. But for now I can only tell you sound issues have effected at least some.
