Try explaining that to a computer using simple logic. It's actually quite tricky and happens to be what this episode is about. In particular, I have an old ambient sounds datapack from a long time ago that requires the answer to this question to be able to function. So if we can come up with a solid answer, then this datapack may have some hope of being useful.

Extra Stuff:
- One of the places I checked for light was in the nbt of block displays (and item displays). I didn't have time to show it, but you can set fixed light amounts for the display entities, and I was hoping it stored the local area light with sky and block light separate. Sadly, it only contained light nbt that had been manually entered and nothing about the environment. 😥
- In case you are making your own datapack, I switched from the location_check predicate to entity_properties part of the way through so that I could check the block I was stepping on instead of one block below (which would give errors on carpets and slabs). Also, there's two light keys, one inside another if you're setting min and max like I was; that tripped me up a bit. 😂
- I gave some more thought to the cave scenario and even on mountains most of the time you will probably be standing on snow, not stone variants, so it could work maybe with a check for snow and not stone even in the most stony and gravelly situations.
