As we can see, there a huge amount of open interest in the AMC call options chain, but actually, theres even more interest in the put options chain. How can that be? AMC has been the most heavily traded stock on all platforms and the buy ratio has outweighed the sell ratio.
Naked shorts are being hidden within married puts, this was uncovered in the GME option chain back in January and is happening right now with the AMC option chain.
A married put is where a short seller gets a market maker to create a share (naked short) and buys that share and subsequently sells it into the market.
The short seller also takes out a put option on the stock (a bet that it will fall). Market makers are allowed to create shares if they cannot locate stock as they have an exemption.
So short sellers are sneakily using market makers to create naked shorts and are then selling them into the market.
