X-Men vs. Street Fighter is a crossover fighting video game developed and published by Capcom. It is Capcom's third fighting game to feature Marvel Comics characters, following X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes, and the first installment in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. As the title suggests, the game includes characters from Marvel's X-Men franchise and the cast from Capcom's Street Fighter series. Originally released as a coin-operated arcade game in 1996, it was ported to the Sega Saturn in 1997 and the PlayStation in 1998.
X-Men vs. Street Fighter features gameplay similar to Street Fighter, but incorporates dual-character selection and tag team-based combat. Each player selects two characters to compete in a one-on-one battle, attempting to defeat the opposing team. The players are given the ability to switch between their characters at any point during the match. The game also incorporates numerous elements from X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes.
The game was released to generally positive reviews, with critics praising its gameplay and sprite animation quality. While the Sega Saturn port received praise for maintaining the experience of the original arcade version, the PlayStation port was met with mixed to negative critical reception for removing several features, such as tag team battles. The changes were done in response to the technical limitations of the PlayStation. A sequel to the game, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, was released in 1997
Playable characters
X-Men vs. Street Fighter features a roster of 17 playable characters. The character sprites for the X-Men characters were drawn from X-Men: Children of the Atom, with the exception of Rogue, Gambit, and Sabretooth, who had not appeared in a previous Capcom fighting game. The sprite designs themselves are based on the characters' appearances from the 1990s animated X-Men television series, complete with the original voice actors. The Street Fighter character sprites are reused from Street Fighter Alpha 2. Similar to his secret guest appearance in Children of the Atom, Akuma appears as a hidden character in X-Men vs. Street Fighter. In order to create a level playing field between the cast of Street Fighter and the X-Men series' superheroes and supervillains, the Street Fighter characters were re-imagined with highly exaggerated versions of their special moves. SNK의 킹오파에 맞서기 위해서인지 1996년 9월 돌연 캡콤에서 CPS2 기판으로 발매한 2 VS 2 태그매치 방식의 드림매치 격투게임. 이후 VS. 시리즈라 불리는 드림매치 시리즈의 첫 번째 작품.
마블 코믹스의 엑스맨 캐릭터들과 스트리트 파이터 시리즈의 캐릭터들이 맞붙는다는 내용의 게임으로 코믹스 원작인 엑스맨 덕분에 꽤나 만화적인 일러스트 및 연출들을 자랑한다.
엑스맨 캐릭터들은 1994년작 엑스맨: 칠드런 오브 디 아톰의 그래픽 데이터를 기반으로 제작되었으며 스트리트 파이터쪽 캐릭터들은 스트리트 파이터 제로 시리즈의 그래픽 데이터를 기반으로 제작되었는데 때문에 설정상 160cm 남짓인 울버린의 키가 류나 켄, 내쉬와도 맞먹는 모습을 보여주는 등 스트리트 파이터 캐릭터들의 덩치가 상당히 작아보이는 부작용이 발생하였다. 덩치가 작아보일 뿐만 아니라 실제 리치도 꽤 후달린다. 참고로 비슷한 시기에 나온, 두 게임 이외의 캡콤의 다른 2D 격투 게임들(스파 3라든가)과 비교해보면 본작에서의 스파 캐릭터들은 평범한 크기이고, 엑스맨 쪽 캐릭터들이 유난히 큰 것.
덩치도 크게 그려져 있는 엑스맨쪽 캐릭터들이 화상수도 무식할만큼 부드럽게 많이 들어가있고, 그걸 그대로 본작에서 쓰고 있기에 엑스맨 캐릭터와 스파 캐릭터간의 용량 불균형도 상당하다. 본작을 위해 도트가 새로 그려진 엑스맨측 캐릭터들(로그, 갬빗, 세이버투스)의 경우 앉아 있을 때의 애니메이션이 없으며[1] 후속작인 마블 슈퍼 히어로즈 VS 스트리트 파이터부터는 마블쪽 캐릭터들에게 앉아 있을 때의 애니메이션 삭제를 비롯해 상당한 프레임 삭제가 이뤄졌다.
시스템은 에어리얼 레이브나 체인 콤보, 슈퍼 점프 등 전작이라 할 수 있는 마블 슈퍼 히어로즈의 시스템을 따라가고 있으며 여기에 실시간 2 VS 2 태그매치라는 요소를 더하여 대기 중인 파트너가 공격을 하며 튀어나와 교대하는 배리어블 어택, 가드 중에 파트너가 튀어나와 반격을 가하는 배리어블 카운터, 게이지 두 줄을 소모하며 두 명의 캐릭터가 동시에 하이퍼 X(or 슈퍼 콤보)를 쏟아붓는 배리어블 콤비네이션 등의 시스템이 추가되었다.
배리어블 콤비네이션으로 발동하는 하이퍼 콤보의 경우 메인일 경우나 대기일 경우 발동하는 하이퍼 콤보가 달라지는 케이스가 있고, 일부는 연출이 간략화되거나, 장풍형이나 돌진형에 해당하는 하이퍼 콤보가 없어서 강화판 일반 필살기를 쓰는 케이스도 있으며, 류와 켄을 골라서 배리어블 콤비네이션을 쓸 시 전용 배리어블 콤비네이션인 사랑과 우정의 더블 진공 파동권을 사용한다.
스트리트 파이터 제로에서 선보였던 초보자를 위한 오토가드 모드가 여기에도 도입됐지만 아무리 초보자라 해도 중립으로 멍때리고 있을 경우도 별로 없고 가드 대미지가 심각하게 증가하므로 별로 추천해줄 만한 모드는 아니다.
초인들의 싸움이란 컨셉에 걸맞게 스트리트 파이터 캐릭터들의 필살기 연출들도 대폭 파워업했다. 류의 파동권은 사람만해졌고 진공파동권은 레이저를 날리게끔 바뀌었으며 켄의 승룡권은 전신이 불에 휩싸여 솟아오르고 신룡권을 쓰면 불기둥이 솟구치는데다가 대공 장풍까지 나가는 내쉬의 서머솔트 셸, 광범위한 장막을 펼치는 춘리의 기공장, 범위가 엄청나게 커진 달심의 요가 플레임 시리즈 등등...
